Every month, members of Kindle Buddies PH vote for the Book of the Month, and for September, the community selected Picking Daisies on Sundays by Liana Cincotti. After finishing it, I now understand why it has generated so much buzz.
At its heart, this novel is a tender story about childhood best friends, first love, and the quiet beauty of simple connections. The story blends youthful nostalgia with heartfelt emotions, creating a reading experience that feels both sweet and sincere.
What stood out to me most was how light the story is. Unlike other young adult romances that lean heavily into dramatic love triangles (The Summer I Turned Pretty came to my mind honestly), Cincotti’s work avoids unnecessary complications. Instead, it offers a straightforward portrayal of love with some sprinkle of pining, patience, and thoughtful gestures. This simplicity is part of the novel’s charm.
Another highlight is the inclusion of Levi’s poetry book, also titled Picking Daisies on Sundays. Although written in French within the story, it’s clear to me when it was first mentioned that these poems reflect his feelings for Daisy. This layering of narrative and poetry adds depth, making the romance feel even more personal and intimate.
The pacing is smooth, the characters well-developed, and the emotional tone consistent throughout. Daisy’s character is particularly engaging — sweet, resilient, and easy to root for. Meanwhile, Levi’s quiet devotion makes him one of the most endearing aspects of the story.
Overall, Picking Daisies on Sundays is a short yet delightful read, perfect for anyone looking for a romance that is uncomplicated but deeply heartfelt. It proves that sometimes, the sweetest love stories are the simplest ones.
