The Smallest E-Reader Yet: My First Impressions of the Xteink X4

Before diving in, a quick note: this isn’t a deep, super-techy review. I won’t be breaking down every spec or running benchmarks. These are simply my personal impressions of the Xteink X4 based on how it feels and fits into my everyday reading.
Xteink X4

I’ve finally gotten my hands on the Xteink X4. It’s the newest addition to my current line-up of e-readers, which includes the Kindle Paperwhite 5, Kobo Clara Colour, and Bigme B6. I used to think the Bigme B6 was the smallest e-reader I owned until I saw the Xteink X4.

Recently launched by a start-up in China, the Xteink X4 is a tiny e-reader made for reading anywhere, anytime. It is currently available for purchase in Shopee, Lazada, Taobao and Xteink's website. I got mine from a seller in our group for ₱4,000 but the unit itself can be bought at a cheaper prize. It is just mine is a package that includes 3 cases and reading light. The device itself is smaller than a phone, weighing just 74 grams with a 4.3-inch screen. Despite the size, it can store a large number of books and works as a simple, no-fuss reading device.

One of its key features is MagSafe compatibility. I can snap it onto the back of my phone. The Xteink X4 uses a paper-like display with a 220 PPI resolution and has physical buttons for page turns and power. I put it side by side my Kindle Paperwhite 5 and I like how crisp it's screen is! Below is my side by side comparison of it.

Immediately after getting, I asked my partner to change the stock OS to CrossPoint Reader OS which I had read good feedback about. Based on its source page, CrossPoint Reader aims to:

  • Provide a fully open-source alternative to the official firmware.
  • Offer a document reader capable of handling EPUB content on constrained hardware.
  • Support customisable font, layout, and display options.
  • Run purely on the Xteink X4 hardware.

A few things to note about the Xteink X4: you can’t load files by drag and drop when connecting it to a computer. Instead, you’ll need to remove the microSD card, connect it to your computer, transfer your files, and then insert the card back into the e-reader.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Xteink X4 does not have a front light. If you plan to read at night or in low-light settings, you’ll need to use a separate reading light.

Overall, the Xteink X4 fits into my collection as a very small, portable e-reader that’s easy to carry around. This post is meant to share my early impressions and how it works for my reading habits, rather than serve as a detailed technical review. As I spend more time using it, I may share more updates along the way.
