The Philippine Book Festival: A National Stage for Filipino Books and The Ultimate Book Experience

February 26, 2026 - I had the priviledge to attend the media launch of The Philippine Book Festival 2026. The Philippine Book Festival (PBF) is the only book festival in the country that is made only for Filipino books. It celebrates books written and published by Filipinos. The festival is led by the National Book Development Board (NBDB). It brings together thousands of books, learning materials, and creative works in one big space. More than a book fair, it is a place where readers, writers, teachers, students, and families can meet and share stories.

Since it started in 2023, the festival has continued to grow. PBF 2026 will happen on March 12 to 15 at the Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall!

Into the Gubat: A Rainforest of Knowledge

This year’s theme is “Gubat ng Karunungan”. A forest is full of life. Many plants and trees grow together. In the same way, Filipino books are full of different voices and ideas.

The festival has four main areas:

  • Kid Lit – For young readers. It has picture books and learning materials that help children love reading.
  • Komiks – A space for Filipino comics. It honors classic creators and welcomes new artists.
  • Booktopia – A home for many kinds of writing like fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and essays.
  • Aral Aklat – Focused on textbooks and school materials for teachers and students.

Creative Corners and Special Events

The festival also has special spaces for art and learning. In past years, the National Library of the Philippines showed rare books, including copies of Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. There were also comic exhibits by artists like Randy Valiente and displays such as Trese by Kajo Baldisimo.

Visitors can enjoy:

  • Lugar Lagdaan – Book signings with authors
  • Bahay Ilustrador – Live drawing and art from illustrators
  • Fiesta Stage – Main talks and performances
  • Umpukan – Small group talks and open discussions

A Growing Festival

From 2023 to 2025, the PBF welcomed more than 120,000 visitors. With help from the Department of Education (DepEd), the festival also helped schools buy more Filipino books. In 2024 alone, book sales for schools reached PHP 946 million. This shows that more classrooms are now filled with local stories.

Celebrating Great Filipino Writers

Many well-known authors will attend PBF 2026. Readers can meet writers like Ricky Lee, Virgilio Almario, and Ambeth Ocampo. Popular authors such as Jonaxx and Ron Canimo will also be there. In komiks, fans can see artists like Manix Abrera and Pol Medina Jr..

On March 14, the festival will host the 43rd National Book Awards. This special event honors the best Filipino authors, illustrators, editors, and publishers.

More Than a Book Fair

The Philippine Book Festival is not just about selling books. It is about sharing stories. It is about meeting people who love reading. It is about celebrating Filipino voices.

Books connect us. Stories help us understand who we are.

Come and explore the forest of knowledge. I have my list already of what to buy! See you at the Philippine Book Festival 2026! 🌿
