Meet the XTEINK X4 Classic

The tiny e-reader lineup keeps getting better.

First of all, a huge thank you to XTEINK for sending me their newest devices! As someone who has been using and testing XTEINK’s tiny pocket e-readers for a while now, I was especially excited to get my hands on the X4 Classic, also known as the X4 V2. XTEINK had already been teasing the X4 Classic ( https://www.xteink.com/products/xteink-x4-classic-pocket-ereader ), and now we finally have more details about what the new device brings to the X4 lineup.

I currently have the original X4 ( personal purchase. ) the X4 Pro, and now the newest X4 Classic/X4 V2, which makes this a fun opportunity to see how much has changed between generations.

If you’ve been looking at XTEINK’s tiny 4.3-inch e-readers and are wondering which one makes the most sense for you, let’s compare them.3

From the X4 to the X4 Classic

MY X4 CLASSIC

The original X4 was one of those devices that felt almost strange when I first saw it. It is tiny and my first Xteink. At only 4.3 inches, it is much smaller than the typical 6-inch e-reader, making it incredibly easy to carry around.

Xteink is pitching it as a dedicated reading device that could literally fit in your pocket  or even attach to the back of your phone.

The original X4 focused heavily on being small, thin, lightweight, and distraction-free. It didn't have a front light or touchscreen, so you controlled everything using its physical buttons.

Then came the X4 Pro.

The Pro kept the same tiny concept but added some features that made it much more practical for everyday reading: most notably, a front light and touchscreen.

And now we have the X4 Classic.

Interestingly, the X4 Classic feels like it brings the X4 back to its original philosophy - no front light and just for pure reading

X4 vs. X4 Pro vs. X4 Classic: What's Different?

All three XTEINK readers share the same 4.3-inch E-Ink display, but each one has a slightly different purpose.

XTEINK X4

  • 4.3-inch E-Ink display
  • Around 58–72g, depending on the version/casing
  • Ultra-slim and pocketable
  • No front light
  • No touchscreen
  • Uses physical buttons for navigation and page turns
  • 16GB microSD storage, expandable up to 256GB
  • Magnetic back for attaching to your phone
  • Best for readers who want a simple, no-frills pocket e-reader
  • The original X4 is now discontinued but some are still available on Taobao, Lazada and Shopee
XTEINK X4 Pro

The X4 Pro keeps the same tiny 4.3-inch form factor but adds the features I think most people would want for everyday reading.

  • 4.3-inch E-Ink display
  • 219 PPI
  • Approximately 72g
  • 111 × 69 × 5.95mm
  • Front light for reading in dark environments

X4 Classic: Back to Basics

The X4 Classic doesn't have a front light. At first, that might sound like a downgrade compared with the X4 Pro. But actually, when I first saw the X4Pro I felt like the display is not the same anymore as how crisp texts appear on an Xteink without front light.

The X4 Classic is designed around a different idea: keep the device as simple, light, and distraction-free as possible. There's no touchscreen. Instead, you have physical controls, plus a new shake-to-turn-pages feature for one-handed reading.

Battery Life

The X4 Pro has a 1100mAh battery, while the X4 Classic uses a 920mAh battery. This is one area where the Classic's simpler design works in its favor. There is no touchscreen and no front light constantly drawing additional power.

So while the Pro has the larger battery, the Classic is designed around efficiency.

So… Which X4 Should You Get?

After having all three generations, I think the answer really depends on what you want from your tiny e-reader.

Do you want the lightest and thinnest experience possible?

The 68g weight and 4.9mm thickness make it incredibly portable. It's also a great choice if you prefer physical controls and want a simple, distraction-free reading device.

Do you want more features?

The front light and touchscreen make the X4 Pro much more versatile, especially if you read at night.

My Take

Having all three devices makes me appreciate how different they actually feel despite sharing the same tiny display. The X4 Pro is still the obvious choice if you want the most functionality. The front light alone makes it significantly more versatile. However if you prefer day reading and doesn't mind using buttons, X4 Classic is a better option.

A huge thank you again to XTEINK for sending me the X4 Classic and for letting me continue to test and experience their newest devices.

And if you're curious about the X4 series, I'll definitely be putting these three side-by-side for more comparisons because there are a lot more little differences to explore beyond the specifications!
